Biking the Meseta, day 3

The choice that isn’t. Official gravel path to the left, trouble free road to the right.

Day 18, Sahagún to Leon

Today’s biking was defined by one question: do I bike the official path, or do I bike the handy, smooth, pot-hole and rock free pavement, with no visible cars on it for-miles-road that follows wonderfully along side the path? Almost the perfect “wine tour” day I had hoped for, with just a little bucking bronco at the end to highlight how swell the previous 5 hours had been. See photos with descriptions below.

Leaving Sahagún, going through the city gate which is adorned with storks.

Pretty good photo of what turns My Little Pony into a Bucking Bronco. This was the terrain for much of day 1.

Penelope the Cruise (my bike name) and I scope out the end of the day terrain. We decide not and I walked while pushing her along.

And then there was this. Has death written all over it. 10% gravel and rutted grade. Leon beckons on the horizon.

So done biking. I have come to love and appreciate beer. I suspect when I get home I will go back to my old ways, but I cannot deny that after hours of walking or biking, nothing beats a beer.

We traveled 180+km from Burgos to Leon in the last 3 days. We are now well past half way, and approximately 380km from Santiago.
