The Elephant Grave Yard

Post #1 in The Elliott Lexicon of Satisfactory Yoga Terminology

Words have always been difficult for me. When I was a kid, my parents thought something was wrong because I played alone in my room. Never mind having four siblings I could interact with.  I liked being alone and spoke little. I have joked for years that Speaking is my 2nd language.

When I started teaching yoga, the deficit was a clear obstacle and classes a challenge. I began “seeing” words and concepts through my past experiences. The correlation between a technique and my minds eye was quite clear to me: really, isn’t it obvious that the buttocks is the SUV of the body?

Not surprisingly, I have spent a lot of time explaining myself.

My students suggested I create a dictionary of terms so they can remember what I’m talking about. I have to admit, at this point I feel I have created an entirely new vocabulary and I could also use a two dimensional reference to jog my memory. This leads me to the first entry in my fictitious dictionary, The Elliott Lexicon of Satisfactory Yoga Terminology.

The Elephant Grave Yard
I must have been about 10 when I first learned of the elephant grave yard. I watched a movie about a man in Africa who was looking for this ancient burial ground.  Everyone knew of its existence, but no one knew how to get there. It was a mystery where these giant beasts went to die, leaving their valuable tusks in the wake of their passing. Whoever found the location of the grave yard found a fantastic, fascinating place, and was rewarded with great riches.

Well, hell, doesn’t that sound just like the lateral groin? Think about it. How often have you heard calls asking you to move this part of the body, but not been told exactly how to do it? I’ve heard about this region of the body forever, known it would change how my femur works in the hip joint, but few have actually said how to access it.

Hence, The Elephant Grave Yard is the lateral groin. Many speak of it with fervor, few really understand how to get there, but if you can figure it out, you’ve hit the mother load!

PS
I can tell you how to get to the Elephant Grave Yard. But first, you have to know about the Unicorn, which will be the subject of the next post.
